About This Spot

Stepping into Undercliffe House feels like entering a cherished corner of Hastings where the rhythm of the sea mingles effortlessly with the warmth of a close-knit local gathering. This intimate Mediterranean seafood spot, tucked on Rock-a-Nore Road, offers a quiet retreat from the bustle, where natural light filters gently through windows framing the coastline and the murmur of waves becomes part of the soundtrack to your meal.

The atmosphere is decidedly unhurried, inviting you to settle in and savor moments rather than rush through them. Its cozy scale fosters an authentic sense of neighborhood intimacy — a place where familiar faces and new visitors alike share a quiet enthusiasm for fresh, thoughtfully prepared dishes drawn from the bounty of the nearby sea.

Menus here feel like love letters to the ocean: the aromas of garlic, herbs, and sea salt thread through plates of tender fish and shellfish, each dish embodying the freshness of daily catches and the care of skilled hands. Whether it's the silky softness of mussels bathed in fragrant broth, the crispness of calamari cooked to perfection, or the richness of sea bass kissed by parsley and buttery garlic, every bite speaks to an unpretentious dedication to quality and flavor.

What makes dining here linger in memory isn’t just the food, but the subtle hum of connection — between diners, the sea just steps away, and the passionate team who welcomes each guest as a friend. It’s a space where attention to detail extends beyond the kitchen, creating a calming yet vibrant nook to lose oneself in good company and genuine seaside hospitality.

We had an amazing meal here, I’d recommend to anyone who’s visiting Hastings or lives there. It’s quite a small restaurant so I’d highly recommend booking especially on a Saturday night. But that added to the cosy/local feel of the restaurant. Being so close to the sea, the food here was incredibly fresh, with specials depending on what’s caught that day. Standout dishes were the mackerel pate starter and the seabass main. Delicious!

Best food, service and atmosphere my family had in a long time! Attention to detail with the dishes (ingredients locally sourced) was second to none and owner Andy and waitress made us feel so welcome. Calamari was best I ever had and the monkfish and sea bass daily specials were delicious. Cannot recommend enough!

Best mussels I've ever had, by far the best restaurant in Hastings. Fresh food, great staff (super friendly, polite and helpful) Definitely coming back

Was there to dine alone. They gave me a window seat where I can enjoy the seabreeze as well as my dinner I ordered a local sea bass for main and all of it was so delicious. The sauté potatoes were crispy outside and soft inside (just like the texture of mashed potatoes). The sea bass were marinated with parsley and garlic butter, the marinade did not take away the flavour of the sea bass, it was balanced so well that I can taste the freshness of the sea bass and also the flavour they added. With the salad, I thought it was just a normal salad. But nope, there were cucumbers, bell peppers, green leaves, cherry tomatoes cooked to perfect ripeness. It was also extra kind for the restaurant to have given me crispy squid on the side The squid was SO FRESH, not just soft (like the frozen ones). Perfect!

You've tried the rest, now try the best! In my view this is by far and away the best fish orientated restaurant in Hastings. You can tell that the fish is really fresh from the amazing flavours and textures, and the fact that the menu is regularly changed and updated, especially the specials board, depending on what's been caught that morning. The venue is situated opposite the Shipwreck Museum and has minimal external signage, so you could easily miss it when going past (refer to my picture to help you identify it). Friendly staff provide a great service. You can watch your food being prepared and cooked if you want to! The chef also comes out to either serve or to have a chat.

Food was lovely, lots of choices. We had mackerel pate, mussels a couple of fish main dishes and lamb shanks. Wine was very nice. The lady that was serving was great, friendly and attentive even though she was busy. One thing that I have knocked a star off for was the atmosphere. On arrival it was a bit flat, no music (although once seated music was put on which helped), also one staff member in the kitchen/washing up area looked very bored (which I am not complaining about as that does happen) but it was off putting as this member of staff was clearly visible in the kitchen to people seated nearby. Would definitely return as I loved the choice of food and it was delicious

I ate at this restaurant twice during my holiday. We received our food very quickly each time. The fish & chips were absolutely delicious, and the sauce served with them was fantastic. The portions were large. The staff were very friendly — both the waiters and the chef. Once, they unfortunately couldn’t serve mayonnaise, but the second time it was available, and it was homemade! Compliments to the chef! We highly recommend this place!
